Greenfield Runway Construction in the Pilbara

Two dump trucks and a road roller paving asphalt on a remote highway near dry hills and railway tracks.

PROJECT CHALLENGE

Constructing a new airport runway in the remote Pilbara required careful planning, logistics management and strict quality control to meet aviation pavement standards. The project involved establishing a complete asphalt production and paving operation in an isolated location, with all personnel, plant and equipment mobilised to site for the duration of works. Maintaining a reliable supply chain for asphalt materials was critical to sustaining production targets, while fatigue management, workforce welfare and compliance with Mineral Resources’ operational requirements remained key priorities throughout the delivery programme.

  • Mobilising personnel, plant and asphalt production equipment to a remote Pilbara location
  • Establishing temporary site infrastructure, laydown areas and hardstands
  • Managing material supply chains to maintain continuous production
  • Delivering works in accordance with airport pavement specifications
  • Maintaining workforce welfare, fatigue management and site compliance requirements

PROJECT SOLUTION

Leveraging the experience now embedded within Roadform’s leadership and delivery team, the project successfully delivered a new 2,100-metre runway pavement within the agreed programme. Detailed planning, supplier coordination and proactive project management ensured consistent material availability and uninterrupted construction activities. Advanced 3D GPS levelling technology was utilised throughout paving operations to achieve the required pavement levels and ride quality, while continuous density testing and independent NATA laboratory verification confirmed compliance with specification requirements. The completed runway was delivered safely, on time and to the high-quality standards required for critical aviation infrastructure in a remote operating environment.

  • New 2,100m x 30m asphalt runway successfully constructed
  • 13,500 tonnes of asphalt produced and placed
  • Delivered within the agreed construction programme
  • 3D GPS paving technology utilised to achieve specification tolerances
  • Independent testing confirmed compliance with density and mix design requirements
