Eastern Goldfields Runway Rehabilitation and Overlay

Two dump trucks and a road roller paving asphalt on a remote highway near dry hills and railway tracks.

PROJECT CHALLENGE

Maintaining operational continuity on a remote mine site while rehabilitating a critical airstrip required detailed planning, precise execution and close stakeholder coordination. The runway remained essential for daily fly-in fly-out operations, meaning works had to be staged around flight schedules and completed under strict mining safety requirements. The project team was responsible for mobilising specialised asphalt production and paving equipment from Perth to a site located 130 kilometres north of Laverton. Night shift operations, temporary ramping works and careful production planning were required to safely return sections of the runway to service each day while maintaining programme commitments.

  • Maintaining uninterrupted daily flight operations throughout construction
  • Delivering all works during night shifts under mine site operational requirements
  • Mobilising asphalt production and paving equipment to a remote location
  • Coordinating daily work fronts with changing operational constraints
  • Managing temporary ramping and staged return-to-service requirements

PROJECT SOLUTION

Drawing on the experience of key members of the Roadform team, the project successfully delivered a complete runway rehabilitation and asphalt overlay programme while maintaining safe and reliable access for mine operations. Early survey investigations and detailed geometric design enabled accurate forecasting of asphalt quantities and programme requirements before mobilisation. Close collaboration with Regis Resources ensured works were coordinated around flight schedules, with weekend shutdown periods leveraged to maximise productivity. The result was a safely delivered project completed on time and within budget, demonstrating the team’s capability in delivering complex pavement infrastructure in remote and operationally sensitive environments.

  • 16,800 tonnes of asphalt produced and placed
  • 68,000m² of runway asphalt overlay completed
  • 50,000m² of runway grooving successfully delivered
  • Project completed safely, on programme and within budget
  • Operational continuity maintained throughout construction
